This is the same basic design and identical pattern as in our other long commercial pattern notched collar sack coat with one exterior breast pocket and two lower exterior pockets. The only difference is a minor variation in the button pattern which we also found in our photographic research. The five buttons are spaced closer together and do not extend below the lower pocket line. This makes for bit more formal and fitted look when worn with the belt as the buttons are closer together above the belt line and the skirt is more open below the belt line.  It still has the the sack coat look without the belt. Made of the same higher quality wool as all of our officer’s sack coats but made about 4 1/2″ longer in the skirt, falling mid-thigh, closer to the length of a frock coat. This longer sack coat was popular with some officers as evident in period photos, even if less economic and utilitarian than the shorter model for the young officer, which was basically the same length as the standard enlisted sack coat. The longer model possibly was considered a more cultured and higher grade appearance, thus, this coat seems to have been popular amongst more senior officers with a split back in order to facilitate movement and service when mounted. (although also documented as worn by some junior company grade officers, especially in the early years of the war) Likely also provides a bit more warmth in colder weather, but also heat in hotter seasons. Of course, likely preferred by taller officers as well. A classic Civil War era and early war look. All button holes are hand sewn. This pattern collar is well documented in private purchase officer’s fatigue coats during the period. Even those who did not have one are often seen wearing the falling collar folded open in this style. It is an attractive period look with a vest and tie, or just the tie in the warmer months. Interior is lined in black cotton and has one inseam breast pocket.  Cuffs are fully functional. Each coats bears interior stamp/label of documented wartime clothier John Hanford of Brooklyn, who made officer’s sack coats. (also stamped with chest size) Because of the length it has a five button front and three button fully functional cuff – all Infantry officer’s Eagle “I” buttons.  This run was also made with the documented type two-piece button which is just a bit less convex than some of the other variations. NOTE: These coats are not sized according to modern standardized models which often include more generous “vanity inches” in the process. Please be sure of your size requirements prior to purchase and disregard other sizing models. If you are unsure please email us with questions. We suggest you take your actual chest measurement, or the largest measurement of your torso, over the clothing items you intend to wear under the coat, and compare them to the actual measurement of the coat in the listing – then choose the coat which offers you the amount of room and fit you desire. The actual measurement of the chest of these coats is 3″ larger than the chest size indicated, ie., a “chest size 42 in.” has an actual chest measurement of about 45″, etc. The buttons can be moved to gain 1/2 to 1″. This coat has straight side seams with no fitted waist taper – it is a true “sack” coat. The sack coat was generally designed to fit much more loosely than the frock or even civilian common coat in order to facilitate movement in the field and the wearing of a vest. Some officers, not subject to fatigue duties, did prefer to have them tailored. Although our clothing items have found widespread approval – uniforming and outer clothing is not our primary business and until now we have restricted sale of such items to over the counter sales at events and at the shop, where the purchaser has the opportunity to try on the item before purchase.
