Common working man’s coat of the period. Virtually the same pattern as our well documented private purchase officers sack coat, the form for which was basically copied from this civilian coat. Standard falling collar pattern with five button front, giving the wearer the option to wear it with the top button open and the lapels laid back or button the whole way up for better protection. The versatile coat is made of sturdy gray and tan woven jean wool. One exterior breast pocket and two lower exterior pockets.  (these coarse jean wool products are made specifically to represent the less refined production of the period and minor weaving anomalies, etc. should be expected. This particular color is also hand dyed using period methods and as a result may have some intended color variations) Our hand cut and drilled wood Gibson style coat size buttons down the front and smaller matching wood buttons on the sleeve as pictured.  (Note: our photo may show this button treated and oiled your may not be depending on run. A suggestion from a well researched  historian suggested that the buttons in the period may have been applied raw cut without such finishing and the more “finished” state of original buttons may have been due to oils from age and use as well as waxing and oiling by soldiers to preserve them from weather. We have done a run with the buttons raw in response so your coat or vest may come with these lighter buttons. They can be easily treated on the coat with the use of a standard period brass or wood, slide or folding, protector for polishing, or,, one can fashion a throw away from any material to do so.) All buttonholes are hand sewn. Interior is lined in unbleached muslin cotton and has one inseam breast pocket. Sleeves are also lined in unbleached muslin. Cuffs, which have a three buttons pattern each, are fully functional. You can keep your coat on, roll up your sleeves and get to work! Marked for southern pre-war and wartime maker N.C. Folger of New Orleans, who advertised as dealing in “Ready Made Clothing” and “Plantation Goods.” NOTE: These coats are not sized according to modern standardized models which include “vanity inches” in the process. The actual measurement of the chest of these coats at the armpit is only 1 to 1-1/2″ greater than the chest size. This coat has straight side seams with no fitted waist taper – it is a true “sack” coat. The sack coat was generally designed to fit more loosely than the common coat, thus the straight side seam, but many period photos do show them being worn quite tightly. Although our clothing items have found widespread approval – uniforming and outer clothing is not our primary business and until now we have restricted sale of such items to over-the-counter sales at events and at the shop, where the purchaser has the opportunity to try on the item before purchase. PLEASE disregard modern sizing models when considering a purchase and instead utilize the actual garment measurements provided in the item description, against the actual measurements of your torso with the clothing on you wish the coat to fit over, prior to purchase.
