The typical method of employing was with the handle out to the side with the oval face mirror vertical, however, the mirror can also be held vertically with the oval employed horizontally depending on what one might be viewing. (side handle mirrors were often used as an attendant could hold the mirror for the lady without facing her front directly. Solid wood handle and frame with no cracks. Patina on the reverse of the handle and mirror back has good age and patina. Could be painted and or decorated as was often done, or simply stained or oiled, or even left as is for the display of the more humble classes. What stands out here for the age of the piece is the condition of the mirror which has only minimal loss. Nice thick beveled glass with no cracks or chips. A very serviceable piece and excellent display item. While appropriate for any region depending on level of effort, I can really see this in use or in any number of southern displays depicting a number of aspects of life during the war. We just love this mirror – it speaks.
