Here is the classic three blade fleam employed by surgeons and veterinarians throughout the Civil War and pre-war period. Brass case with three folding spade shaped blades of different sizes for different cutting depths. Often identified as “pocket” fleam as they could be carried for quick hand use if need be. Truthfully, the folding multiblade tool was compact and safely closed into the brass case for better storage against damage and fit into a smaller space or kit. It also was more easily accessed rather than sorting through individual graduated pieces.  This one has very nice age patina and shows honest use – just the kind of artifact we love and prefer – it has history and character. No markings, so it was not the super higher end city doctor’s piece – it was for the field working or travelling medical man. It has been sharpened as a result of extended use. Will display well.
