Description

Copied from the standard wood block folding compass which was the standard for military and exploration use from Lewis and Clark to the Civil War era, documented in mutliple references and collections. Our piece comes in the typcial period cardstock box complete with label from documented wartime maker, H. W. Hunter & Son. The 2 1/2″ square hardwood block hinges on one side and the other has the brass hook closure found on all of the originals we have inventoried. Inside is a simple and functional face with the red and white needle. On one side of the block is affixed a label which also promotes the company’s newly patented and forthcoming “Day and Night” deluxe version compass, dated 1862. Every officer should have one, along with many senior NCOs!
