Boston Indexical Soap Tin
Boston Indexical Soap Tin
$12.95
Description
Friction lid on this three inch round japanned tin with a label bearing the name of the documented wartime and pre-war soap manufacturer Boston Indexical Soap Company. (designed with the travelling gentlemen or soldier in mind) The tin is just over one inch deep and has a pressed bottom and rolled lip on the lid. (such pressed bases are seen on several different types of these shallow tins commercially manufactured during the period) With meticulous attention to detail each tin contains a 2.5 oz handmade round of lye soap with oatmeal and olive oil wrapped in exact style as an original in our collection, complete with a copy of the soap makers package seal. The dark blue paper is also our especially acquired copy of original period wrappings which is a thin soft finish, yet waxed on one side to prevent drying and contamination. The tin is japanned utilizing period methods, a process believed to have to inhibited rust. As is with all such japanned tin, there are some anomalies to the surface where the finish may crackle or “pop” when the tin expands and contracts from heat during the finishing process. Not designed as a particularly heavy or thick coating, of course there is minor scratching, etc, to the surface from storage and handling universally seen on japanned tinware, now just as 150 years ago. Additional and replacement soaps available.
