Description
Made in same design as documented period tinsmith pieces for various types of products such as tobacco, etc. This oval shaped soldered and seamed hinged lid container is made of brass to avoid rust. Has a neat raised rope design around the top rim of the lid and where it closes down on the bottom. Such brass items are sometimes associated with nautical applications but is perfectly appropriate for the land lubber as well. Some soldiers did carry soap in their packs, baggage wagons, and certainly had it in extended bivouac and soap pieces and travelling tins are documented in their effects from both abandoned camps and battlefield personal effects, museums, etc. This piece has application to soldier’s and citizens alike. (don’t forget – except for the few “regulars” he was primarily a citizen-soldier) Definitely made for campaign/travel. Found with a piece of vintage hand cut soap inside and has patina and residue inside from use. Very nice even age patina on the outside. Will display very well and is also still quite serviceable. Another great and relatively rare personal item to complete any display. A decent reproduction cost this much!
