Description

We searched for many years before we ever found any example of this version of the Civil War era soldier’s pocket religious icon. In our experience it is one of the most rarely seen in the Civil War collecting marketplace. My suspicion is that they were a bit more expensive but in fact fairly popular and kept by their owners and ancestors alike. There is one pictured in CWCE, Vol II, pg. 157, identified to a S. Carolina soldier. (see our reference and research key). Consists of the standard period brass case seen in many references and well documented in our other listings. The icon is a small crucifix on an oval base with a separately applied Christ figure on the cross. The patina suggests that the cross and figure are silver, or at least silver plated. The only one we have ever offered for sale.
