Checked Shirt, White Pleated Panel w/Detachable Collar
Checked Shirt, White Pleated Panel w/Detachable Collar
Description
Here is another of our newer shirt offerings based on period advertisement and photographic research, being a dress shirt made from a checked woven cotton material with a refined white and black or dark blue and white pattern. (very close in appearance – only black and white is pictured) The pleated front panel, banded collar and the removeable folding collar are all also refined, or “boiled” white cotton. (seen in photos with and without the folding collar in place or with tie/cravat) The construction on this shirt makes for a comfortable woven shirt body and allowed the purchaser of the period a more affordable alternative for the popular pleated front style as it used less of the more expensive refined (boiled) white cotton material and a smaller area to starch should the fellow wish such a luxury. When worn with a vest or the notched collar coat, only the white shows in the front. We can mark the collar for either a northern or southern maker. (please specify in comments or no maker mark will be applied – no returns for collar marking when no preference is indicated) There is a button placed at the center of the back of the banded collar which corresponds to a buttonhole on the detachable collar. There are buttonholes on each end of the detachable collar which can be buttoned over the front collar button on the shirt. This simple attachment method was found on the more common version of such shirts, so they could be worn either with or without the dress collar without the necessity of a collar stud to close the shirt. Ten pleats on the panel. Gusseted sleeves, rounded bottom skirt with curved slits at side seams. As was common during the period, all machine-sewn seams with hand sewn buttonholes and genuine cut shell mother of pearl buttons. Collars were available during the period from throw away paper and cardstock, to soft materials and those with stiffeners added or inserted, including painted metal! This is yet another example of the efforts of period manufacturers to produce a shirt which has a bit of style and panache above the most common, yet versatile and practical for the common fellow. I like it! VERY LIMITED INITIAL RUN.
