Common Spectacles w/Case

Common Spectacles w/Case

$28.00

Description

Common brass/gold metal framed spectacles with oval lens and beaver tail end earpieces, a common style for the period. The case is the most common of the era, covered card stock open end slip style with a velvet lining. A few incised lines on the case to add that flair of mid 19th C. craftsmanship and detail found even in the most common of items. A quick wipe down with a light oil or wax shoe polish would bring this case back to a good luster – I leave it to you to decide if you prefer to leave it as is. The nose bridge on these specs has been lovingly repaired – looks like a quite old repair. I don’t buy a lot of these, just enough to satisfy a few collectors and living history folks. When we look to inventory items we are not necessarily in search of the perfect or mint condition, especially in the very personal items. We prefer the character that comes from loving use and careful preservation by it’s original owners. That speaks the volumes of it’s history and reflects more accurately the life of the CW soldier and citizen. Could have replaced them maybe, but the humble reader chose to repair them and carry on, for whatever reason. That makes them more worthy of display, with transcending value in our opinion, especially in a throw away, latest gadget, less respecting, less introspecting society we seem to live in. (hey, it IS my soap box!)
