Early Pattern Folding Knife
Early Pattern Folding Knife
Description
After repeated requests from customers, we decided to again offer our longtime line of pocket knives on our website, available for the last twenty years in the field and our shop. This pattern folding knife is well documented to both the the 18th and 19th century. It is immediately recognizable as an English/European pattern which was popular in America for decades, including through the Civil War period. Some considered it a “gentleman’s” pocket knife, likely due to the elegant pattern, the fact that it was likely a bit more expensive, and in the immediate antebellum years it’s popularity with the Southern aristocracy. However, it was popular with all classes and regions and documented as such, made by quality makers into the post war period. (the original we examined, circa 1830-40 had no mark) This pocket knife type does seem to have a more prominent southern provenance during the war, but still appropriate for either region. A brass bolster with a brass piece and ball which protects the point on the opposite end of the handle. Three elegant looking incised lines adorn both brass ends. Brass pins hold the handle in place. Solid steel spring mechanism and steel blade. Overall length is 8 3/8″. (Note: We have been advised of blog blather and website claims that the fingernail groove on folding knife blades is anachronistic to the CW era. This is utter nonsense and even a cursory look at knowledgeable sources would confirm so. While we have no problem with the idea that not all knives of the mid-nineteenth century may have sported the convenience, and that reproductions that do not either are not incorrect, they were a commonplace faeture in period production and to suggest otherwise, by whatever motivation, is simply wrong and does not serve the living history community fairly) Comes wrapped in our heavy treated paper tube folded in a unique period style seen on small period packaging with seals on each end and labeled for a high quality pre-war maker known to have made such folding knives. (we have inventoried an 1850s produced package of small files from this maker which were wrapped in this exact style) A nice solid knife at a good price. Available with either a white bone or dark buffalo horn handle. The brass on the bone handled knife is brushed, polished smooth on the dark handled version. Note: The blades on these knives are very sharp and the spring mechanism is strong and tight opening and shutting them until broken in on most of them. Please be very careful. By purchasing this product online the customer certifies that he or she is 18 years of age, and agrees that The Sutler of Fort Scott, LLC assumes no liability for personal injury to the purchaser or others as a result of it’s use or handling. I am sorry but we have had to now limit purchases to two pieces per order as we are again experiencing purchases of our consumable products in quantity and reports of them being resold, with our labels and packaging, at a premium by unscrupulous blanket type vendors, depriving our individual living history customers of the opportunities to buy our museum quality items at our reasonable prices. We are not a sutler supplier, we are the sutler. We do not work hard at our research and development on your behalf, while keeping costs as low as we reasonably can, in order to provide our products for the lazy to profit from at your expense.
