Embossed and Jappaned Oval Tobacco Tin
Embossed and Jappaned Oval Tobacco Tin
$28.95
Description
An oval tin with friction lid which we have japanned utilizing our trademark historically documented methods. Affixed to the center of the lid is an embossed brass plate which indicates “TOBACCO.” in a bordered rectangle with clipped corners. The end result is a very fine looking, plain, yet subtly elegant, simple little tin which evokes the period in signature style. Patterned after an original we inventoried for sale some years ago, which appeared patterned somewhat after the classic 1860 Parker patented tobacco tin. Measures 2 3/4″ x 3 1/2″ x 1″. The lower portion is two pieces with a side seam and rolled edge at the base with a flat bottom inserted inside, a documented period method. The bottom is lined with paper. The more shallow top is pressed, also often seen in such vessels of the period. The edge of the lid is also tightly rolled. A label from a prominent dealer and distributor of such items and their contents is neatly affixed to the underside. (the majority of labels found on such small items, often used for promotion, were from dealers and vendors, not makers) The japanning is done with a more satin dull finish seen on many period items and has typical variances of the hand applied method of the era. Just the ticket to keep the tobacco safe in the coat pocket, pack, valise, shoulder/saddle bag or travelling trunk/box. Happy to have had at least a short window of dry weather to knock out a few of our japanned items. (they do not cure completely and properly in high humidity – but yet some sun heat is helpful – soon it will be bake to slow baking – a much more temperamental process. We made this stuff outside all year when we were in AZ!)
