A nice excellent somewhat softer, tighter weave quality-weight wool over-shirt in a standard pattern of the period, very similar to that which was actually subsequently adopted by the Army for issue. Extra long skirt, which could easily be trimmed shorter if needed and desired to be worn as a tucked in shirt, this run has a straight even edge hemmed skirt as the militia and early war battle type overshirt is documented, which could also be rather easily slit and scalloped if desired to facilitate tucking the longer skirt. (a photo of previous runs with curved skirt is also shown) We have purposely made the skirt longer to accommodate the use as an outside civilian overshirt or use as a military type battleshirt and made them in only larger sizes to accommodate that use. (these battle/overshirts were worn very loose fitting – just as the basic CW era shirt was in order to facilitate working movement – commonly much more loose than the common sack coat. Actual garment measurements are as follows: We are offering this very limited run in a 48″ chest measurement and a 52″ chest measurement. Neck measurement from center of button to center of button hole are 17″ and 18-1/2″. (this is the actual garment measurement at the armpit, not a size – please measure yourself and determine which shirt is appropriate for you. Neck button could be slightly adjusted, often worn open with cotton shirt underneath as pictured, particularly in the western theater) High grade black enameled, stippled front, tin buttons and all hand sewn button holes. This is a great winter overshirt which will keep the soldier/citizen nice and cozy over any cotton shirt or undershirt, and, great for sleeping in the colder months! We have sold this shirt to men who have used it for double duty as an outer gray battle shirt whilst portraying the several regiments who employed them. This was done with accoutrements worn over the shirt as pictured. Many of these shirts were employed by militia and partisan organizations and several are available for view within the Steamboat Arabia collection, c.1850s.
