Description

FINALLY, BACK IN STOCK! You asked for more and it’s indeed been a long haul trying to get these done again in the current supply and contract climate. This is a product we had been after producing ever since we first examined and photographed the original in a private collection some 30 years ago. (after two and a half decades we were eventually successful in presenting to the Living History and museum community this exclusive to SOFS product) Made virtually the same as the common wood pencil of the day but the body is actually made of a reconstituted “softer” version of harder rubber. The pencil is smooth round and the standard pencil length. It sharpens and writes exactly the same as a wood pencil. I have included a photograph of one that I sharpened with my Union Knife Company pocket knife and scribbled in one of our Ringwalt’s notebooks. Each pencil is marked the same as the original we examined with the patent mark and date in the exact same font. “GOODYEAR 1851.” Each package contains six pencils, and is folded in a typical configuration taken from our research and handling of many, many similar period packages. The labels on the front and back of the package are faithful productions from an original label and advertisement of the American Hard Rubber Company founded by Conrad Poppenheusen in 1851, a pioneer in rubber goods manufacture and a later magnate of ownership and merger in the industry. NOTE: This run is wrapped in our period correct-weight black paper which is made also for our period needle packs, matches, etc as opposed to the green pictured. This paper has been observed in our most recent research in use by American Hard Rubber company in the packaging of various products such as combs, etc. We are very excited to finally offer this product, finding the right combination of craftsman and manufacturers to produce the end result for you after decades on the back burner of our R&D hopes and dreams.
