Gold bullion and black silk Federal eagle on dark blue velvet. This device was used on the Army Hat to hold up one side of the brim. Stars, and starburst above the eagle’s head. Ribband in eagle’s mouth has gold fabric field and black silk lettering. The field above the eagle’s head is light blue and the stars are silver bullion. Eagle is surrounded by gold wire border. This documented design was considered a higher grade of the many variants of this badge available for the private purchase of officers. Comes in a paste board box labeled for James C. Ritchie of Cincinnati, a well known pre-war and wartime dealer in military goods and fraternal regalia. Back of badge is black muslin and is also tagged for the dealer. Interior of box has our signature period, tissue thin, brown paper – copied after examining multiple period boxes and packaged items.
