Description

After a short hiatus and repeated requests from customers, we have again decided to offer our longtime line of pocket knives on our website, available for the last twenty years in the field and our shop. A nice bone handled pocket knife in the popular period hawkbill style. This type knife is well documented to the period and was popular with sailors, soldiers, and tradesmen alike, considered a great configuration for many working applications. As in several original examples we examined, the handle is made of genuine bone and attached with brass pins, and the blade is unmarked. The bolster is brass and the handle lining is brass. The spring and blade are sturdy steel.  (Note: We have been advised of blog blather and website claims that the fingernail groove on folding knife blades is anachronistic to the CW era. This is utter nonsense and even a cursory look at knowledgeable sources would confirm so. While we have no problem with the idea that not all knives of the mid-nineteenth century may have sported the convenience, and that reproductions that do not either are not incorrect, they were a commonplace feature in period production and to suggest otherwise, by whatever motivation, is simply wrong and does not serve the living history community fairly) These knives come wrapped in our exclusive treated paper, along with waxed inner wrapping to resist moisture, and, closed with label from southern period cutlery maker and distributor of all  manner of cutlery and hardware. (we have faithfully reproduced this paper which we have examined in use wrapping original knives, files, small tools, etc.) Many folding knives documented to the period were made and/or sold by vendors and bore no maker marks, especially southern makers, only the labels and occasionally a handle marked for the distributors. A quick check of collecting sites will reveal literally hundreds of different unmarked knives attributed to the period. James C. Moses was such a vendor in Knoxville, Tenn.  advertising in the prewar period as early as 1850 and doing business throughout the conflict. They are sold in the package – the same that they got in the day – a functional knife for a reasonable price.  Notice: The blades on these knives are very sharp and the spring mechanism is quite strong and tight on some of them. Please be very careful opening and shutting them until broken in.
