Description

Copied from original examples, this is the last of our cap covers left over from our Gettysburg field stock. Mr. Marsh starts at square one making the oil cloth himself from scratch using period methods and then carefully assembles them per the originals. The hand sewn side button holes are slightly elongated to allow for the one size fits all application. Inside of crown is marked for the Gutta Percha Manufacturing Company with applicable dates, a documented period maker of inclement weather gear. (see Woshner) We are very excited to offer this fine item for the discerning soldier wishing to turn back the dampness, when duty requires his relentless service. Another Sutler of Fort Scott exclusive from the same maker of our Mechanic’s Hats and Oil Cloth Wallets. (this is the removable cap cover only, the cap is not included) Note: When ordering determine your measurement utilizing a string stretched around the outside of the hat, with it on, above the buttons and chin strap, not over them, to best facilitate the proper fit. Many original photos suggest that the chin strap, which was commonly made easily removable was taken off and placed back on the hat over the cover to allow it to remain easily deployable and functional. If your cap does not have a removable chin strap you must measure over the chinstrap to have a cover that will fit. Also note that some makers place the side buttons centered between the the front and rear seam which is not consistent with the far majority of originals we have examined and all but renders the chin strap unusable as it needs to be in front of the ear, not over it when deployed. If this is the case with your cap – you may need to move the side buttons to accommodate your cover.
