Description

The name may seem quite counterintuitive unless familiar with the design of the device. Made to be stored and or carried, even in the pocket, so that the business end of the tool does not threaten one’s other import objects, or necessities of life. (also protects the point of the screw from being damaged) The screw folds into the handle to form a protective ring, while a simple pressure spring mechanism is formed where the screw fits between either end of the ring where it closes. Made during the period of both iron and heavy gauge round steel, the latter being the less expensive of the types. Here the screw is twisted steel about the weight of a typical ice pick. The handle is a bit heavier. Many we have examined become loose and the spring is not so sturdy. This one is still nice and tight and locks well with a nice snap. These came in various sizes and lengths during the period. This is the common size made for the individual drinking bottle which had a shorter mouth and neck, thus a somewhat more shallow cork than a full-size whiskey or wine bottle. (it will still pull most modern wine corks) These bottles were for more immediate consumption and thus did not need to have such a deep seal for longer term storage. While some screw tops were patented for drinking vessels the cork stopple dominated the culture. Having a corkscrew handy in the trouser, vest, or coat pocket was an appreciated accoutrement, thus the period popularity of the item and why they also found themselves into the documented effects of soldiers as well. Seen in multiple CW references and found in CW era advertisements as well. Good honest age and patina. Very displayable and quite serviceable. Getting difficult to find the older ones at any price. (Last seen in CWPG $45.00)
