Soldier/Sailor’s Shaving Kit (A6)

Description
Here is a fine item we have had in our display collection for going on 20 years. It is time to let some things go and turn over some items to our collecting friends. (we are in the process of culling our personal and R&D inventory) Consists of a flat carved wood box with a hollowed out safe to keep the razor in. Carved wood handle and the top swivels open in the same manner as many period shaving mirrors. Lid has leather strop applied for razor sharpening. Looks to be hand made, possibly by the soldier or sailor himself. This type shaving kit is well documented and commonly attributed to both soldiers and sailors but for some reason it is the primary type seen with sailor’s effects. (see Lord’s Vol 5, pg 204) Inside, as we found it, is a Henry Sears made razor dated 1865. (other side is marked “888”) Razor is in good shape with a buffalo horn handle and clear markings. Blade is engraved “QUEEN 3/4”. We have left the kit as we found it but are quite positive the kit predates this razor, it may simply be a replacement as the previous one was lost or became unserviceable. This type of kit is generally dated in the 1840-60 period. (it should be noted that a much higher percentage of US sailors stayed in the service into the post war period than the hundreds of thousands of state volunteers who went home) Excellent age patina and honest wear – just the way we prefer them. This is a wonderful piece with fantastic character which will display very, very well. Priced at significantly less than retail for the kit without the razor.
