Striped Shirt, Banded Collar
Striped Shirt, Banded Collar
Description
Continuing our quest to provide better representation of the vast diversity in Civil War era style and design and break the cookie-cutter moulds plaguing even the most authentic Living History circles! Here is our latest period pattern shirt made after several descriptions seen in period advertisements personal accounts, and various documented collections. Made in typical period pattern with gusseted sleeves, a banded collar, three button front placquard, and two breast pockets. This shirt is made out of a very well made high quality printed cotton shirting. All the button holes are neatly hand sewn as seen in the photos and the buttons are black lacquered tin. We have hand dyed this material utilizing period methods to represent a color scheme we found in our research described as “hickory striped” with possible southern provenance. (Not the blue and white striped material also known as “hickory” but the color) The period personal description which we reviewed referenced a “fine” cotton shirt made in a printed reddish brown color, described as “hickory”, with a black stripe. There are documented period shirts produced in printed striped cotton in use by both US and Southern soldiers in various collections. Without attempting to make any comment on the determination of any of the prevailing opinions or controversy over CW era “hickory” material shirts, we have produced this shirt in a hand dyed rich reddish brown and narrow black striped shirt cotton for your enjoyment. This is not a coarse woven material by high grade cotton shirting. It is a handsome, smart looking shirt which could be easily adapted, with an added button in the back, for a detachable collar should you wish to do so. Limited quantity for this initial run. As with all of our hand dyed shirts, we recommend washing alone, in cold water, and hang dry. See Sizing Chart on Home Page under Woven Checked – pre-washed shirts for corresponding garment measurements to size.
Important Note: To prevent fraying on the interior non-visible edges of the shirt seams and provide better durability and integrity for the garment, we apply a machine sewn interlocking blanket stitch on the cut edges of the material along the interior of the inseams. This stitch closely resembles machine stitching that was available during the period and also mimicks hand stitching that was in use well before the period. (the machine developed to do this specific stitch which is now used was first patented in the immediate postwar period in the 1870s) If this is a feature which you find unacceptable for some reason, please do not order this shirt. The alternative methods of dealing with this issue by hand would result in a significantly more expensive product for our customer and there is adequate selvage to either cut it off or simple roll the selvage stitching under and hand flat fell the seam should one wish to.
