Description
This small simple oval tin is found employed in the period for many, many applications, but commonly referred to as an inexpensive snuff tin – certainly one of the documented popular uses. Slightly domed lid, flat soldered base. Typically lightly japanned, we have seen it among soldier’s effects employed as a housewife, a fishing kit, a fire starter kit, a matchsafe, goggle case, as well as a nib box, hair pin box, spice box, postage stamp box, coins and jewelry – just about anything small and loose. We have also seen examples with the CW era Parker patent stamp seen on his well known eyeglass and larger oval tobacco tin. This one was japanned and retains 50-60% of the finish although it is nicely worn and muted with good age and patina. Hinged lid still closes nice and tightly – not the case very often. This a common consumable package of the day seen employed to keep many essential and cared for items in everyday life for the soldier and civilian, often overlooked by collectors and dealers who don’t want to mess with the little common stuff, yet just about any period display ought to have one. It is seen in many CW era references on soldier’s personal effects and period culture. I like this example a lot – and we have had literally dozens and dozens – good character with good use but still very sound and serviceable if you like – the perfect combination.
