Tobacco Twist

Tobacco Twist

Description

In the same defunct 1850-1870 dry goods store lot we bought that yielded our vintage lye soap squares was a box with tobacco twists. The majority were trash but we did manage to save quite a few intact, or mostly intact. They were wrapped in bulk together in paper so while some disentegrated to a degree they were fairly well protected. Many ended up in museum displays. Here is one in good displayable condition. Originally twisted into a pig tail and then the ends tied together. The bend in the twist is where the majority of loss is but originally twisted together before it was completely dried out, it is still held together pretty well. Tied with a cotton string, yellowed with age and likely from tobacco itself. Looks like it has some coating on it – probably waxed. A very rare find to complete the soldier’s essentials display. Each piece is unique so what we have left will be sold one at a time.
