Workman’s Companion Pocket Knife

Description
A copy of the no frills, common workman’s/mechanic’s folding knife with provenance dating well into the pre-war period, possibly even the 18th century. Our original is documented to a maker who began doing business in America in the 1850s. (made by several makers before and after as well seen described often by the occupational application – “carpenters”, “sodbusters”, “mechanics”) Plain yet quality hardwood handle with steel liner and pins. Blade is good quality steel and the strong spring is also solid steel. Overall length is 7 3/4″. Many original examples of this knife are found unmarked. Our original merely carries the symbolic mark of it’s Solingen maker indicating it was a well made knife regardless of it’s common application. This mark is not reproduced by us out of respect. (we have included a couple photos of our original for you closed and of the off side) (Note: We have been advised of blog blather and website claims that the fingernail groove on folding knife blades is anachronistic to the CW era. This is utter nonsense and even a cursory look at knowledgeable sources would confirm so. While we have no problem with the idea that not all knives of the mid-nineteenth century may have sported the convenience, and that reproductions that do not either are not incorrect, they were a commonplace faeture in period production and to suggest otherwise, by whatever motivation, is simply wrong and does not serve the living history community fairly) Knife comes wrapped in our treated paper to prevent moisture, with a label affixed for a well known pre-war and wartime American maker who also produced this model, Hassam Brothers of New York. (we have faithfully reproduced this paper which we have examined in use wrapping original knives, files, small tools, etc.) We have a period belt knife in our collection made by this firm, with a partial hand stamp in a very small font, barely readable. We had the little mark reproduced, which we discerned with a loop, copying the very small font and lettering, made into a hammer stamp. The result on this reproduction was exactly the same – a barely readable partial hammer mark somewhat discernable with a loop! We thought it might be more readable newly stamped – even with my aged naked eye – but it is the same – at least we know it is authentic and we were happy to stamp them for you! Notice: The blades on these knives are very sharp and the spring mechanism is strong and snaps tight when opening and shutting them until broken in on some of them. Please be very careful.
