Description
Taken from a family ancestor’s inventory doing business before, during, and after the war is this great mid sized note book. Measures 5″ x 7″ so it still fits nicely in the pack, sabertache case, etc. (while we still produce our convenient “vest pocket” size, this larger model reproduced in response to many requests) This is just the ticket for the officer or sergeant who wishes to have his vital information handy, or any soldier who wishes to chronicle the events or just jot something down. While I served as an orderly sergeant it was vital to have such a book for roster quick references, guard and fatigue schedules, etc. It was the same when I was a company grade officer and beyond for schedules, etc. Invaluable for the various staff officers. While fancy embossed and detailed interior diaries were popular, many, if not the majority of journals and diaries kept by soldiers were such simple consumable books. Equally appropriate for any civilian application – original examples abound with personal and business records recorded in them. Here is your common book, the type many, many a fellow employed and sold cheaply in mass quantities by sutlers and storefront merchants alike. Cover is thick paste board covered with various period patterns of marbled paper and a coated black spine. The paper is natural unbleached and the pages are lined. Period advertisement for a popular related item, which also features my ancestors business as a distributor, affixed to the back, done as the original on the bright orange paper which became popular in the 1850s and 60s. Facsimile of interior and front label from my ancestor’s shop. Unable to serve due to age and health, he had a brother and nephew who served valiantly for the Union, both prominently buried in front of the Molly Pitcher statue in the Carlisle Cemetery.
