Recognized and documented pattern for pre-war, civilian and CS wartime use. One of the most basic simple haversacks of the period made in cotton duck canvas. The bag is made of one piece of canvas folded over with a machine sewn inseam and topstitching sewn on the edges. No liner. The flap, which comes to a point has a hemmed top stitched edge and a reinforcement piece is sewn to the inside where the button hole is. The button hole is hand sewn and the bag sports our own hand cut and drilled bone button closure. (button copied from original in our collection) The bag measures 11-1/2″ wide and 12-1/2″ tall, closed and laid flat, the strap is 1-1/2″ wide. Click the Research link) This haversack pattern is well documented in many references to both early and later war production with primarily southern provenance, with specific examples we are aware of to both Georgia and Virginia. This by no means restricts the use to those states alone as most examples do not have known maker markings and the pattern was common. (I believe neither the GA or VA examples have any other info other than the owner and regiment) Marked for D.B. Camp of Savannah, who had wartime production of all types of military material culture, as well as ready made clothing and rubber goods.  A very simple and “common” type economical production item for the period. A solid, sturdy and simply handsome, well-made bag.
