This documented tube shaped pillow was made specifically to go inside of wider pattern wheel type caps to provide form and shape to the hat for a more formal appearance. It also raised the inside of the cap creating an air space which kept the head cooler. The result is the classic “mushroom” shaped cap seen in so many photos of the period. While narrower more “bell crowned” cap styles had a lesser need for such an item, the wider ones tended to collapse and sit flat on top of the head. Some caps actually had similar padding sewn into them. The flat floppy style is well documented in period photos, especially amongst workman, etc., and is by no means is an inappropriate presentation of the fashion. This bolster can be worn with any of our “Civilian “Mechanics Caps” to achieve the desired look, but is purchased separately. Made of 100% cotton muslin with cotton herring bone tape ties and hand stuffed with raw 100% cotton fill, no synthetics. Pillow portion not including ties measures 24″ long – short enough to fit into smaller sized hats and still has the desired effect on our larger sizes. (a small space in the back does not effect the shaping as the pillow is packed tight enough to spring open with the tie extended)
