White Wool Overshirt
White Wool Overshirt
Description
NOTE: We made a small quantity of these shirts for a Living History site project and ended up with a surplus of several pieces left, just one in each size. We had made some in the past, but found only minimal regional interest. If it is an item you would desire in another size or, have pards that would also be interested in this item, please send us an email at sutleroffortscott@hotmail.com stating so and what size you would have preferred. NO PROMISES! Please see sizing chart for this item and also remember if wearing as a battleshirt that it must fit over any underclothing desired. These shirts were designed in the period to fit very loosely, the collar size being the only real critical measurement. If there is enough interest we will consider adding a small quantity to our seasonal production schedule. Please remember, as per our clearly stated policy, we take no advance orders nor do any individual custom work.
A nice smooth finish mid-weight weave wool shirt in a standard pattern of the period, very similar to that which was actually subsequently adopted by the Army for issue. Fold over stand and fall collar, three button front placquard and gusseted sleeves. Extra long skirt, which could easily be trimmed shorter if needed and desired to be worn as a tucked in shirt, has rounded bottom with slit on side, reminiscent of the late 18th c. work shirts, hunting shirts, &tc, &tc. We have purposely made the skirt longer to accommodate this use as an outside civilian overshirt or use as a military type battleshirt. Our high grade genuine bone buttons and all hand sewn button holes. Body is machine sewn per typical originals of the period. This is a great winter overshirt which will keep the soldier/citizen nice and cozy over any cotton shirt or undershirt, and, great for sleeping in the colder months! This creamy white wool has a smooth comfortable feel, not scratchy, and actually could be worn alone if desired. (price reflects the higher cost of this high quality material and of white wool in particular) We have sold this shirt to men who have used it for double duty as an outer battle or huntig shirt. (This was done with accoutrements worn over the shirt) Many of these shirts were employed by militia and partisan organizations and several are available for view within the Steamboat Arabia collection,c. 1850s. Often they were trimmed or personalized being adorned with symbols, &tc. That we leave to you. A nice versatile shirt for the winter and transition months campaigning.
